Representative Cleaver Pushes for Congress to Use
Alternative Fuel Vehicles
Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) has introduced legislation, the
Congress Leads by Example through Alt-fuel Resources (CLEAR) ACT, to require
the use of alternative fuel vehicles by Members of Congress.
CLEAR accomplishes this by prohibiting lawmakers from using their
‘Representational Allowance’ – funds for official duties such as mailings,
office supplies and travel – on vehicles which do not use alternative fuels.
“Surely Congress cannot sell the American public on the need to abandon its
gas guzzlers when they observe Members of Congress proudly driving them.”
Cleaver explained in a press release announcing the introduction of CLEAR
legislation.
CLEAR (H.R.
5338) continues the tradition of the
Energy
Policy Act (EPAct), which pushes for the use of alternative
transportation fuels and requires that certain departments of the federal
government use alternative fuel vehicles. CLEAR would further the goals of
EPAct and help demonstrate that Congress understands the need to end our
dependence on oil.
Citizens for Global Solutions encourages Congress to pass Representative
Cleaver’s bill. This legislation will help express to the American people
and the world that the United States is serious about curbing greenhouse gas
emissions and pursuing alternative fuels for a sounder, safer energy policy.
