Alternative Energy: Lugar Calls Upon U.S. to
Internationally Engage on Energy
In a recent speech given at the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C.,
Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) expressed the need for the United States to
engage in international coordination on energy issues. In an effort to begin
developing solutions for the looming energy crisis, Lugar is expected to
introduce new energy legislation designed to expand international
cooperation in order to “enhance preparedness for major disruptions in oil
supplies.”
Senator Lugar highlighted the fact that 77 percent of the world’s oil supply is
controlled by foreign governments and that U.S. energy costs are on
the rise. In fact, the U.S. paid 17 percent more for its energy in 2005
than the year before. With energy costs now accounting for a third of the US
trade deficit, Lugar predicted that the U.S. would spend $320 billion on oil
imports this year alone.
“No one who is honestly assessing the decline of American leverage around
the world due to energy dependence can fail to see that energy is the
albatross of U.S. national security,” stated Lugar. The Senator proposed
several new alternatives for weaning the United States off of its dependency
on foreign oil. These alternatives include improving the fuel efficiency of SUVs, researching clean coal electricity plants, and encouraging oil
companies to produce pumps that use a higher percentage of ethanol.
Senator Lugar’s commitment to introducing the United States to more
economical and environmentally friendly fuel sources show his determination
and exemplify the qualities of a global leader. Citizens for Global
Solutions applauds the Senator for his dedication and for encouraging
Congress and the American people to utilize alternative fuel resources.
