CITIZENS FOR GLOBAL SOLUTIONS | Emily Phan-Gruber

Jon, I’m reporting tonight on an NGO. What’s an NGO you ask? Well its stands for a no-good organization. And tonight I’m going to cover the most no-good of them all called Global Solutions Citizens, or wait no it’s Solutions for Global Citizens. No that’s not right either. To be completely honest, no one can really remember its exact name and it’s not really that important for this piece.

This summer I did an undercover internship with this organization to see how they were planning on taking over the world with their radical globalist agenda. I have to say Jon, I was severely disappointed with their lack of initiative. I mean I really expected to find some crazy ideas, some global taxation, global government, but sadly I found nothing of the sort. I mean these people were completely focused on solving the crisis in Darfur, securing UN peacekeeping funding and opposing the nomination of John Bolton. I was disappointed by what I had found, but that $10 a day travel stipend convinced me to stick it out for the rest of the summer.

I thought this would be a regular intern gig, one where you don’t actually have to use your brain, but just go and get your boss coffee, but with the internship program these CGS people actually did have some crazy ideas. They let interns do work. I mean I don’t know if they just haven’t gotten the memo, but I was busy this summer. I had to write and research, go to Congressional hearings, coalition meetings, make phone calls to Congressional offices and watch C-SPAN for eight hours and I have to tell you Jon I learned more about our political system in that day than I ever wanted. Despite my best efforts, I actually learned massive amounts this summer.

I was also severely disappointed by the lack of cynicism of these people. This is Washington; it is the cynical capitol of the world. How can it not be when you turn on the TV these days and see that Congress is not dealing with pressing American problems like flag-burning. But these people actually believed in what they are doing and let me tell you, it’s definitely not the money that is keeping them there. It’s quite curious really.

All in all Jon, it was an interesting summer. Sadly, my story about CGS promoting global government didn’t pan out, but I did succeed in finding an anomaly of sorts in Washington.

Now back to you Jon.

I want to thank all the staff at CGS for being so friendly and helpful this summer. I especially want to thank Don, Drew and Simon. It was a lot of fun working in the Gov Relations Department and thank you for all of your help and sharing your insight with me. My fellow interns: it was a lot of fun and you all made the day much more entertaining. Ray, my fellow intern in crime, it was a lot of fun working with you and maintaining our solidarity on numerous counts (except about that $20). I had a great summer at CGS and I highly recommend applying for an internship here because it is a highly rewarding experience.
