ABOUT CITIZENS FOR GLOBAL SOLUTIONS
Vision: Citizens for Global Solutions envisions a future in which nations
work together to abolish war, protect our rights and freedoms, and solve the
problems facing humanity that no nation can solve alone. This vision requires
effective democratic global institutions that will apply the rule of law while
respecting the diversity and autonomy of national and local communities.
Mission: We are a membership organization working to build political will in the
United States to achieve our vision. We do this by educating Americans about our
global interdependence, communicating global concerns to public officials, and
developing proposals to create, reform, and strengthen international
institutions such as the United Nations.
ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM *
We offer substantive internships to undergraduates, graduate students and
recent graduates in our National Office in Washington, DC. All our internships
are hands on and challenging.
With over 17,000 members nationwide and over a 55 year history, Citizens for
Global Solutions staff, interns, and member activists carry out advocacy on
issues within our program areas:
- U.S. Global Engagement: Promoting a multilateral foreign policy.
Proposing reforms to make international decision-making more effective,
transparent, accountable, and democratic.
- Communications: Drafting Press Releases, News Articles, Letters
to the Editor on Program Issues and Pertinent Events
- Government Relations:
- International Law and Justice: Strengthening laws and institutions
that protect human rights and help nations resolve disputes peacefully.
- Health, Poverty and Environment: Supporting global cooperative efforts to
confront environmental and public health challenges.
- Outreach and Advocacy:
Under these program areas we have specific projects on Connecting the Global
to Local Project, the World Federalist Institute, the International
Criminal Court, Peace Operations, UN Reform, Community of Democracies, the Urban
Environmental Accords and Responsibility to Protect.
Duties include:
- Attending coalition meetings
- Attending meetings with Congressional staffers on Capitol Hill.
- Writing press releases, fact sheets, and/or briefing papers
- Analyzing the voting patterns of Congress in regards to select
international related votes
- Following election campaigns & Communicating with candidate election
committees
- Creating, writing, and backstopping electronic advocacy initiatives
(on-line petitions, etc.)
- Updating the Global Solutions website
- Helping with membership development (mailings, some phone work, etc…)
Requirements:
- Passion for learning and an interest in international issues
- Knowledge of U.S. politics and/or international affairs and/or journalism
OR
- Interest/training in Electronic Advocacy/IT technology
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills
- General computer skills, some knowledge of HTML or FrontPage is a plus but
not required
In addition to the many duties listed above, interns will learn much about
current events and issues within each of our five major program areas. In
addition, interns can learn about and work on the Citizens for Global Solutions
Political Action Committee. This PAC is a nonpartisan membership-based advocacy
organization that gets into the thick of things during a congressional election
year. Staff and interns also regularly lobby members of the U.S. Congress and
the Administration to support issues such as timely payments of U.S. assessments
to the U.N., U.S. participation in U.N. peacekeeping missions, support for
increased U.N. conflict prevention action capabilities, and U.S. participation
in the International Criminal Court.

any issue).
