TOP TEN HELPFUL HINTS

These ten hints can help your article get published.  Stick with our tips, and soon, you'll be on your way to making a difference within your local, regional or even global community!

  1. Catch your readers’ attention immediately and focus tightly on your issue.
  2. Express your opinion, and explain why it matters to your audience.
  3. Explain why the issue is timely.
  4. Don’t be afraid to be a little bit controversial, but be sure that you aren’t being outlandish.
  5. ‘Speak’ to the reader.  Be personal in your article and your audience will respond positively to your conversational writing style.  Use active verbs- this helps to make your point and also keeps you from boring your readers.
  6. Identify the readers  of the publication. Technical information and long, multi-syllable words are often not appropriate for a general audience.
  7. Ensure that your viewpoint is crystal clear and that you are decisive about which side of the issue you are on.  Don’t be vague or you will confuse your audience.
  8. Educate your reader but don’t condescend.
  9. Towards the end of your article, clearly re-state your position.
  10. When appropriate, issue a call to action to your community and to elected officials.
