Acquiring a Fire Engine Before the Fire Breaks Out: A Proposal for a
UN Emergency Peacekeeping Service
Once again the international community is acquiring the backbone to address
the deteriorating situation in Darfur, Sudan. However, if the United Nations
had a rapidly deployable Emergency Peace Service in place, this delay in
helping Darfurians would have never occurred.

Uncle Sam Wants You to Reform the United Nations
In 2003, the President Bush warned that the United Nations would
become irrelevant if the Security Council refused to back the U.S.
invasion of Iraq. Yet, to no one’s surprise, the U.S. has returned to
the U.N. time after time to deal with international crises.

A Time for New Blood: A Plan for the Next Ambassador to the U.N.
Say what you will about the U.S.-U.N. relationship, it has never
been boring. But each year, despite the differences that inevitably

Nations, and the U.N. needs smart, principled, and focused U.S.
leadership.

Washington Examiner.

A U.N. Role in East Timor
In recent weeks commentators have framed the uprisings in Timor
Leste as a country that has spiraled into violence, despite the presence
of U.N.
peacekeepers. This gives the false impression that the United Nations
has failed in the country formerly known as East Timor. The reality is
significantly different. Read Senior Fellow Raj Purohit and
co-author Jose Ramos Horta's most recent op-ed featured in the Boston
Globe.
