July 26, 2005 Statement on Appointment
of Roger Winter as Special Representative for Sudan
Washington DC – Citizens for Global Solutions today applauded the Bush
Administration for appointing Roger Winter to serve as Special Representative of
the Deputy Secretary of State for Sudan. The appointment of Mr. Winter is a
positive step toward ending the conflict in Darfur, which the Bush
Administration has, for nearly a year, referred to as genocide.
President Bush, former Secretary of State Powell, and others in the
Administration have courageously spoken out on the atrocities in Darfur and have
called for an end to the genocide there. Secretary Rice’s recent trip to Sudan
helped magnify world attention and sustain the Administration’s commitment. The
appointment of Mr. Winter represents another important step. His career as a
forceful and effective advocate for the world’s voiceless — including those in
Sudan -- gives him tremendous credibility. Mr. Winter must now work with others
in the Administration to increase the pressure on the Government of Sudan to
take immediate action to stop the killing and help the International Criminal
Court bring those responsible to justice.
Charles J. Brown, President and CEO of Citizens for Global Solutions said, “The
Bush Administration has taken another important step that should help end the
carnage that has ravaged Darfur. Yet much more remains to be done if the
President is to end what he has rightly called genocide. America must complement
its statements with action and sustain its actions with resources. This includes
giving greater support to African Union forces and International Criminal Court
investigators on the ground.”
