CITIZENS FOR GLOBAL SOLUTIONS'
CAMPAIGN FOR A 21ST CENTURY UN
Washington DC – Citizens for Global Solutions launched
its un21">“Campaign for a 21st Century
United Nations” today, in support of a more effective United Nations and
stronger U.S.-UN relations. The campaign, which will run through the upcoming UN
Summit in New York, will educate the public about the United Nations and
illuminate the importance of the Bush Administration playing an engaged and
cooperative role in the UN’s revitalization process.
Heather Hamilton, Vice President for Programs at Citizens for Global Solutions,
noted: “The upcoming meeting of world leaders – the largest gathering in history
– is truly the Summit of all summits. Member States have an unprecedented
opportunity to create a 21st Century United Nations and collectively address
today’s most pressing global problems. Citizens for Global Solutions is working
to ensure that the current broad support of the U.S. public for an effective
United Nations is translated into concrete commitments by the Bush
Administration.”
As part of the campaign, Citizens for Global Solutions will
- Premiere the interactive website,

- Manage a media resource center,
- Initiate a local and national radio tour,
- Host town hall meetings,
- Provide background information and action tool kits,
- Distribute brochures and other literature, and
- Reach out to Americans across the country and ask them for their support
for the un21">“Campaign for a 21st
Century United Nations”
In addition, Citizens for Global Solutions will gather
signatures calling upon the Bush Administration to “exercise determined U.S.
leadership to forge a United Nations that is stronger, more effective and
capable of tackling the challenges of a new century...” Specifically, Citizens
for Global Solutions will call on the U.S. to commit to the principle of the
Responsibility to Protect, a principle that safeguards civilians in any country from crimes against humanity,
genocide, war crimes, and ethnic cleansing when their countries fail to do so;
the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals including reaching a target
of 0.7 percent for Official Development Assistance (ODA); and a comprehensive
plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to combat the growing threat of global
warming.
