A resolution urging the Government of National Unity of Sudan and the Government of Southern Sudan to implement fully the Comprehensive Peace Agreement

Introduced on March 2, 2006 by Senator Willliam H. Frist (TN-R).

• This resolution urges the new Government of National Unity of Sudan to enforce and meet the terms agreed upon concerning the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that was signed on January 9, 2005.

• Advocates the Government of National Unity to use the Comprehensive Peace Agreement as the basis for negotiation of a peaceful resolution of the conflicts in Darfur and other areas of Sudan.

• Encourages the international community to actively support the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

• Urges the United States Government to encourage the Government of National Unity to uphold and utilize the Peace Agreement, as well as maintain current sanctions, and to also address any barriers where there may be potential prevention of humanitarian efforts in southern Sudan.

Status: Agreed to by the Senate with a preamble and by unanimous consent on March 2, 2006.
