Introduced on July 14th, 2006 by Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT)
• Urges the appointment of a presidential special envoy to Sudan to monitor
the situation in Darfur, coordinate policy, lead negotiations and report on
parties’ compliance with the Darfur Peace Agreement.
• Authorizes the president to provide at least $250,000 to support the
presidential special envoy.
• Reiterates that both chambers of Congress have declared the atrocities
committed in Darfur to be genocide and that an estimated 400,000 people have
died to date.
• Acknowledges that violence and instability in the region continues even
after the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) was signed in May 2006.
