Status of US Membership: Signed September 24, 1996 but not ratified. In
1999 the Senate voted to reject ratification. Key Terms: CTBT bans all
nuclear explosions, for any purpose, warlike or peaceful. In order to enter into
force, the CTBT must be signed and ratified by 44 listed countries that have
some form of nuclear technological capability, including the US.

Preparatory
Commission for the CTBT - The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive
Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO Preparatory Commission) is an
international organization established by the States Signatories to the Treaty
on 19 November 1996. It carries out the necessary preparations for the effective
implementation of the Treaty, and prepares for the first session of the
Conference of the States Parties to the Treaty.
