AMERICANS RECOGNIZE IMPORTANCE OF FOREIGN ASSISTANCE
A new poll released by Zogby International reveals that a
majority of Americans recognize foreign aid as an investment that can be
a successful tool in improving America’s image abroad and enhance our national
security. Americans understand that events in other countries affect their way
of life. By supporting U.S. foreign assistance, Americans want to help
other countries lift themselves out of poverty and, at the same time, ensure
security abroad and at home.
A majority of the public (87%)
believes that the U.S. should give aid in the event of emergencies like droughts,
famines, floods and other natural disasters that primarily affect developing
countries. This reflects the generosity of the American public, which was
exemplified by the aid given in previous tragedies including the Asian tsunami
and various earthquakes around the world.
Additionally, 69% of the
American public believes that the government should also give aid to reduce
poverty and expand access to education. Americans realize that investing in
education is effective because it gives poor people the basic tools for success
and the opportunity to change their lives.
The public wants a foreign
policy that reflects the American values of generosity and helping people help
themselves. By providing sufficient foreign assistance, including access to
education and disaster relief, not only does the U.S. provide relief to affected
countries, but it ensures stability and improves the American image abroad.
