POLL FINDS HIGH LEVEL OF TRUST IN UN AND NGOS; CONTINUED
DISCONTENT WITH US
June 4, 2004 - A recent poll conducted by
GlobeScan and the
Program on International Policy
Attitudes found that
59% of those polled worldwide trust that the United Nations "operates in
the best interests" of their societies. Even with the current war in Iraq and
the negative shadow that the Bush administration has cast on the lack of UN
support, 64% of Americans polled also trust that the UN is working in the US'
best interest.
NGOs came in at the top of the list in terms of public trust.
In fact, worldwide, NGOs earned the trust of 65% of those polled. Of the 20
nations included in the poll, Turkey was the only nation where the level
of trust for NGOs fell below 50%. The United States average of trust for NGOs
actually topped the worldwide average, coming in at 66%.
This poll is reaffirms findings of an
earlier poll by
The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press that there
is growing discontent worldwide with United States' policies. The results of the
PIPA/GlobeScan poll show that only 37% of those polled worldwide think that the United States
is having a positive influence on the world. In a fifth of the countries polled,
the United States received less than a 20% approval rating. This can be
contrasted to the 67% of Americans that believe the United States is having a
positive influence on the world.
