U.N. CONVENTION ON THE LAW OF THE SEA
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
is a landmark treaty outlining a set of rules for common use of the world's
oceans. The treatys diverse champions range from the White House and the
Department of Defense, to environmentalists and the oil industry; ideologically-driven anti-internationalist groups seem to be
its only opponents.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved
the treaty in late February 2004. However, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist
(R-TN) refused to allow it to go to the floor for a vote, even though it would likely
pass by a wide margin. Citizens for Global Solutions is working with a broad
coalition of concerned organizations on an aggressive media campaign. Together,
we are bringing a common message to Senator Frist to ensure passage of this
important agreement.
