December 2, 2004 -- Today, a blue-ribbon UN panel released its long awaited report on reforming the UN for the 21st Century, “A more secure world: Our shared responsibility.”  The report suggests a host of reforms designed to update the UN to face the threats and challenges posed by today’s world: poverty, infectious diseases, armed conflicts (both between states and within states), weapons of mass destruction, terrorism and organized international crime rings.

The report has the potential to reshape the United Nations and redefine collective security. A core premise of the report is that “today’s threats recognize no national boundaries, are connected, and must be addressed at the global and regional as well as the national levels.” It is a “must read” to understand the security threats facing the world today.
