"In a world of interconnected threats and challenges, it
is in each country's self-interest that all of them are addressed effectively.
Hence, the cause of larger freedom can only be advanced by broad, deep and
sustained global cooperation among States. Such cooperation is possible if every
country's policies take into account not only the needs of its own citizens but
also the needs of others. This kind of cooperation not only advances everyone's
interests but also recognizes our common humanity.”
~ UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, In Larger Freedom
____________________________________
In our increasingly interconnected world, cooperation to
solve global problems is a practical requirement. The United Nations stands
today as the one place where all the countries of the world can come together to
create comprehensive solutions to these problems and move us all toward a
better, safer world. That is why it is so important that we work with others
constructively to build on the successes of the United Nations and make it
stronger to meet today’s new challenges.
As the United Nations celebrates its 60th
year, most
observers agree that it must be made more effective and relevant to our new
century - and for the first time member states agree that this can be done.
From September 14-16, the United Nations hosted the largest gathering of world
leaders in history. At this meeting, countries focused on
Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s groundbreaking proposals to promote democracy,
protect human rights, end poverty, and meet the threat of global terrorism.
