Security Council Refers Atrocities in Darfur, Sudan to the International Criminal Court
April 1, 2005 -- In an historic vote, the UN Security Council referred the situation in Darfur, Sudan, to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Security Council Resolution 1593 passed 11-0 with the United States, Algeria, Brazil, and China abstaining.

March 16, 2005 -- A group of 15 UN Human Rights Experts released a joint statement calling on the UN Security Council to "immediately adopt concrete measures to end the violence" in Darfur, Sudan and refer the situation to the International Criminal Court.
