Rwandan Genocide Suspects Facing Prosecution by ICTR

September 29, 2005 -- Joseph Serugendo, former member of the Comité d’Initiative, the steering committee of Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM), and a former member of the National Committee of the Interahamwe militia, was transferred today to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) detention facility in Arusha, Tanzania.

Serugendo, who was arrested September 16, 2005, in Libreville, Gabon, will face charges in connection with his alleged involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Specifically, he is charged with five counts of conspiracy to commit genocide, genocide, complicity in genocide, direct and public incitement to commit genocide and persecution as a crime against humanity.

In related news, Michel Bagaragaza surrendered to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania. Bagaragaza, who was director general of the office controlling the Rwandan tea industry, was indicted in July 2005.

Bagaragaza is charged with conspiracy to commit genocide, genocide and complicity in genocide. Specifically, he is charged with ordering his subordinates and with instigating, aiding and abetting others over whom he did not have authority, to kill hundreds of Tutsi civilians.
