Chief Prosecutor for Sierra Leone Tribunal Calls for Taylor’s Extradition

October 13 - Desmond De Silva, chief prosecutor for the Special Tribunal for Sierra Leone, called on Nigeria recently to extradite former Liberian President Charles Taylor. Taylor served as president of Liberia until 2003, during which time the West African country was plagued by conflict.

Taylor was indicted by the Special Tribunal in 2003 for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other serious violations of international law, including the use of child soldiers. Although he served as president of Liberia, Taylor is accused of supporting the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and other rebel forces during Sierra Leone’s civil war.

According to reports, Nigeria indicated it would consider a request from Liberia for Taylor to be returned, but it would not consider such requests from a third party. Nonetheless, De Silva indicated the Special Court is conducting negotiations with Nigeria for Taylor’s extradition.
