Milosevic Escapes Justice
Slobodan Milosevic, the former leader of Serbia and the former Yugoslavia
was found dead in his cell on Saturday morning at the Scheveningen detention
centre in The Hague. An autopsy conducted by Dutch doctors revealed that
Milosevic died from a heart attack.
Milosevic had been on trial at the U.N. International Criminal Court for the
former Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague. He was indicted on 66 counts for the
commission of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Bosnia
(1992-1995), Croatia (1991-1992) and Kosovo (1999). The 'Butcher of the
Balkans' was extradited to The Hague in April 2001, after he was ousted by a
popular uprising in February of the same year. Milosevic's inflaming
rhetoric of Serbian nationalism sparked ethnic conflict that destroyed the
region. The Balkan conflicts claimed over 200,000 lives and displaced at
least one million people.
The death of Milosevic brings a premature end to the most high profile trial
at The Hague; Milosevic's trial was the first time a Head of State stood
trial for war crimes and genocide. The ICTY will still continue to try other
high-ranking individuals accused of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia.
