UN Security Council Calls for Taylor’s Arrest
November 17 -- Last Friday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for former Liberian President Charles Taylor’s arrest and transfer to the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL). Under UNSC Resolution 1638, the mandate of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has been expanded to allow for Taylor’s apprehension and detention “in the event of [his] return to Liberia."
UNMIL was also tasked with the responsibility of transferring or facilitating Taylor’s transfer to Sierra Leone for prosecution before the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
Taylor was indicted in 2003 by the SCSL and faces charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other serious violations of international law, including the use of child soldiers.
