Sudanese NGOs Call for Sudan to Accede to ICC
October 24 -- During a roundtable conference convened in Khartoum earlier
this month, representatives from Sudan’s humanitarian sector called for the
country to accede to the International Criminal Court. The groups called for
ratification of the Rome Statute to the ICC in light of the UN Security
Council’s referral of the Darfur situation to the ICC for investigation of
grave rights abuses.
The roundtable was convened by the International Federation for Human Rights
(FIDH), Sudan Organization Against Torture (SOAT), Khartoum Center for Human
Rights and Environment Development, and Amal Center for Rehabilitation of
Victims of Torture. Ninety participants attended the conference, during
which working groups agreed to several key objectives, including creating a
national coalition urging Sudan to ratify the Rome Statute; facilitating a
public-awareness campaign about the ICC; developing training about
international justice mechanisms; and lobbying for changes in Sudanese law
to align with international standards in human rights and humanitarian law.
