September 18 - UN Security Council passes
Resolution 1564, which calls for the creation
of a "Commission of Inquiry" to determine whether genocide has occurred, and
threatens possible sanction against the government of Sudan if it does not stop
the violence.
September 9 - Secretary of States Colin Powell
announces that the U.S. government has concluded that the ongoing violence in
Darfur constitutes genocide.
August 31 – Peace talks set to resume after rebel
leaders walked out on August 29 following accusations of ceasefire violations.
August 30 – Nigerian troops leave for Darfur to aid
the 150 strong Rwandan force in protecting ceasefire monitors.
August 29 – UN Security Council resolution 1556
expired with no clearly defined UN strategy for imposing measures against
Khartoum. With division in the Security Council, it is questionable
whether sanctions will be imposed at all.
August 19 - The Nigerian Senate (Nigeria is chairing
the AU) approves plans to send up to 1,500 troops to Darfur, in addition to the
150 person force that is scheduled to arrive by the end of the month.
August 23 - Peace talks to be held between government
of Sudan and rebel forces in Abjuba, Nigeria.
August 15 - 150 Rwandan troops arrive in Darfur to
protect AU ceasefire monitor.
August 9 - Sudanese government rejects AU proposal for
a peacekeeping mission, calling it 'colonialism'.
