U.N. Human Rights Body Accuses Sudan of Darfur Atrocities
March 15, 2007 -- An independent team of investigators commissioned by the U.N. Human Rights Council delivered their report on the current situation in Darfur to the Council in Geneva on March 12th. Although the Sudanese government prohibited the High-Level Mission from entering Darfur to conduct its investigation, the concluding report includes information about massive human rights violations in the western region of Sudan.

International Criminal Court Issues Summons for Darfur Suspects
February 27, 2007 -- In his announcement from The Hague today, ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo requested a summons to appear for Ahmad Muhammad Harun, former Minister of State for the Interior of the Government of Sudan, and Ali Kushayb, a Janjaweed militia leader in Darfur. Both men have been accused of working together, and on behalf of the government of Sudan, in committing 51 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Darfur people.

Diplomatic Pressure Mounts on Sudan
January 10, 2007 -- A flurry of diplomatic visits and pressure on Sudan to act on Darfur occurred this week. Various envoys to Darfur or Sudan from the United States, the United Nations, the African Union (AU), and civil society groups conducted diplomatic missions to secure adequate protection for the people of Darfur and jump-start the political peace process.

Sudanese President Accepts Peacekeeping Package for Darfur, Questions of Size and Strength Remain
January 5, 2007 -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir accepted a package of U.N. support for peacekeeping in Darfur. Originally agreed upon at a meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in November 2006, the package includes a three phase process to strengthen the current African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) and the eventual deployment of a hybrid AU-U.N. force.

November 17, 2006 -- The spread of violence from the genocide in Darfur has created a disastrous humanitarian situation in Chad. With fresh violence and attacks on refugee camps in both Darfur and eastern Chad, Chadian officials are accusing Sudan of "exporting the Darfur conflict," while Sudanese officials claim that the government of Chad is supporting Darfur rebels.

Sudan Agrees "In Principle" to a Stronger Hybrid U.N.-AU Force For Darfur
November 17, 2006 -- At a meeting convened by outgoing U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and co-chaired by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Sudanese government agreed "in principle" on November 16 to a mixed United Nations-African Union force in the Darfur region of Sudan. Although the size of the hybrid peacekeeping force is yet to be determined, Sudan's consent "in principle" is a significant step forward for the troubled region.

Khartoum Expels UN Envoy from Sudan, Cites Envoy as Security Threat
October 23, 2006 -- On October 22, the Sudanese government called for the expulsion of the UN envoy to the Sudan, Jan Pronk, citing Pronk as a national security risk to Sudan. Pronk's expulsion is related to two recent Sudanese military losses in Darfur during skirmishes with rebel groups.

October 23, 2006 -- On October 13, over a year after it was introduced, President Bush signed the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (DPAA) into law. The House approved the bill in early April, and the Senate unanimously adopted the bill last month.
